Freeform fiction derives its name from freeform poetry. Freeform poetry arose in the PreERA as a response to the rigid structures placed on poems and poetry — structures like rhyme scheme, proper grammar, standard punctuation, and meter. The creators of freeform poetry decided that they wanted to remove existing rules and be allowed the freedom to create their own. In a similar fashion, freeform fiction is a new literary genre that aims to remove the restrictions placed on normative fiction writing — structures like using standard prose, proper grammar, adhering to punctuation and capitalization rules, story arc, start-to-finish design, etc. It is aimed at allowing authors to create their own rules for fictional storytelling. While there is some debate as to who created the literary genre, Thresher Charles is inarguably the author who popularized it. His first Freeform Fiction book, Please hold your questions until everyone is gone: A collection of short stories., released during a Double Frē week, was the most read novel of ERA 26. When I first read Thresher Charles’s All horses are naysayers (and all naysayers are hoarse)., it was as if someone incinerated all of the conventional rules of storytelling. He took the best features from fiction (protagonist, narrative, etc.) and the best features from poetry (saying as much as possible in as few words as necessary), and made them into something much larger.
