The Great Narrative: A personal story of tragedy and triumph.
[…] If one were to ask a person, “Describe your life in a few short sentences,” that person would likely respond with some combination of their Great Tragedy and their Great Triumph. These two moments are the two events during which a person develops her Great Narrative. The Great Tragedy is the event during which one experiences her negative emotions to the greatest extent up to the present moment. This usually involves an extreme loss of others or of self. The Great Triumph is the event during which one hopes to experience their positive emotions to the greatest extent. These ideals usually involve successes, redemptions, epiphanies, accomplishments, etc. These two moments bookend the entirety of a person’s life. […]
After each Great Tragedy, one will spend some time reflecting on how the Tragedy has affected her self. This period of time is referred to as the Long Sit.
