Freeform fiction derives its name from freeform poetry. Freeform poetry arose in the PreERA as a response to the rigid structures placed on poems and poetry — structures like rhyme scheme, proper grammar, standard punctuation, and meter. The creators of freeform poetry decided that they wanted to remove existing rules and be allowed the freedom to create their own. In a similar fashion, freeform fiction is a new literary genre that aims to remove the restrictions placed on normative fiction writing — structures like using standard prose, proper grammar, adhering to punctuation and capitalization rules, story arc, start-to-finish design, etc. It is aimed at allowing authors to create their own rules for fictional storytelling.
