Excerpt from novella: the mosquito says to the leaf, “am i in a trap?”

finally, as the mosquito landed down onto the leaf,

her little mosquito heart sinks at the feeling in her feet.
she tries to lift them but can’t, until
quietly, the mosquito says to the leaf, “am i in a trap?”
hoping for her life
that it doesn’t respond.
